Life in the slower lane...

My philosophy is to live low cost, so I can enjoy good health, gain more time, work my own business and leave a smaller imprint on our environment.

We live in Donnybrook WA, a small town of 4000 and enjoy growing our own veges, producing our own power, using rain water and keeping our own "wants" in check!  This is the hardest but you find you slowly adjust and then when you discover a great second hand book from the market for only $2 or a sleeping bag for the dog bed at a garage sale... well, you just feel really pleased with yourself.

We definitely have learn't to enjoy the more simple things and having the time to do this I consider a privilege. We have made some choices that may not be for everyone and definitely having a very small home was one. We call our place the "little chalet" on top of the hill but it suits us. Cheap to run, easy to heat with a small fire for winter and cleaned, top to bottom in no time.
We have a TV but not a microwave, a fridge but no freezer and enjoy a stroll to the outdoor laundry in all weather but don't feel as if it is a chore.

I have a purpose built studio, made of recycled materials from an old demolished house, out the back. This space I enjoy and as my "Soapery". It is a credit to just how ingenuity is born from necessity and how design comes together when you have to use only the materials you can salvage, It looks great and is a wonderful space for my soap making.

Here I enjoy creating wonderful natural soaps and hope to eventually have people call in and visit as I often have requests. This is a project we are continuing to work on and it is certainly taking shape.

We aren't hippies quite yet, not even tree changes .... we are just living a conscious life of our own design. We make other people feel good and they love our soap!

Good to hear of your living simply with a dollop of style and grace in the Australian countryside. It feels like more and more of humanity - after so long wasting energy and precious resources and living beyond their means - are waking up to living sustainably with nature.

My own little place, way over in the California hinterlands, has kept me nicely, thank you, for three decades, for one "living without water or electricity" or seen as such in the eyes of conventional-minded. (have solar electricity and rain catchment).

Thanks for sharing

I started making soap as I have sensitive skin and so did many people around me. I wanted to make a product that was natural, gentle, affordable, sustainable and made locally.  I value health, fairness, truth and our environment.
